How it works
- What is a Course Handicap?
- Your Course Handicap is the number of strokes you actually receive at a specific course and set of tees. Your Handicap Index is portable; the Course Handicap converts it for how hard that particular course plays.
- What is Slope Rating?
- Slope measures how much harder a course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch golfer. It runs from 55 to 155, and a course of standard difficulty is 113 — which is why 113 sits in the formula.
- What is Course Rating?
- Course Rating is the score a scratch golfer is expected to shoot, in strokes (e.g. 72.4). Subtracting par from it accounts for a course that plays harder or easier than its par suggests.
- What is the formula?
- Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par), rounded to the nearest whole number. With slope alone you get a close estimate; add Course Rating and Par for the exact figure.
